Making a paper tube telescope is a great way to learn about focusing light and get a better look at distant objects. With just a few simple materials, you can have a telescope of your own that you can use to explore the night sky.

To build your own paper tube telescope, you will need the following materials:

  • One sheet of 8.5 x 11 inch white paper
  • One sheet of 8.5 x 11 inch black paper
  • One 3-inch diameter cardboard tube
  • One 4-inch diameter cardboard tube
  • One sheet of aluminum foil
  • One sheet of clear plastic wrap
  • Scissors
  • Tape
  • Glue

The first step is to cut the 8.5 x 11 inch white paper into a circle that is slightly larger than the 3-inch diameter tube. Cut the 8.5 x 11 inch black paper into a circle that is slightly larger than the 4-inch diameter tube. Then, use the scissors to cut a 3-inch diameter hole in the center of both circles.

Next, take the 3-inch diameter tube and cover it with the white paper circle. Secure the paper to the tube with tape. Then, cover the 4-inch diameter tube with the black paper circle and secure with tape. Make sure that the hole in the center of the paper circles are aligned with the end of the tubes.

Now, take the aluminum foil and cut it into a circle that is slightly larger than the 3-inch tube. Place the foil on the white paper circle and secure it with tape. Then, take the clear plastic wrap and cut it into a circle that is slightly larger than the 4-inch tube. Place the plastic wrap on the black paper circle and secure it with tape.

Finally, take the 3-inch tube and insert it into the 4-inch tube. Secure the two tubes together with glue. Allow the glue to dry completely before use. When the glue is dry, your paper tube telescope is ready to use!

Now that your paper tube telescope is complete, you can use it to look at distant objects. Make sure to adjust the focus of the telescope by moving the 3-inch tube in and out of the 4-inch tube. With a little practice, you will be able to get a clear view of the night sky!

Simplest Telescope | English

This really Simple Telescope was designed by SASTA – the South African Agency for Science & Technology. The telescope’s tube consists of 3 cardboard tubes, each 30-cm long. There are two lenses – the BIG OBJECTIVE is Convex-concave and the SMALL EYEPIECE is Concave-concave. The three tubes of slightly different diameters fit into each other and can easily slide. Thus the length of the tube can be increased and decreased. The sliding of the…
