I Hate My Gums Cause They Black

Okay, so, real talk for a sec. You ever just… look in the mirror and go, "Ugh, my gums." Yeah, me too. And lately, my gums have been giving me serious side-eye. They've gone a little… dark. Like, really dark. Black, almost. And I'm over here like, "What the actual heck?"
Seriously, who decided gums were supposed to be this pretty, rosy pink? Mine have apparently decided they're channeling their inner goth. It's not a subtle shade, either. It's like they've been dipped in permanent marker. Permanent marker! Can you even imagine?
I mean, I brush. I floss (most days, don't judge me). I even use that fancy mouthwash that tastes like it's trying to scrub your soul clean. So why, oh why, are my gums looking like they’ve been secretly hanging out with a chimney sweep? It’s a mystery, wrapped in an enigma, wrapped in… well, black gums. Joy.
And it's not like it's a little discoloration. It's a full-on, in-your-face pigmentation situation. It’s starting to freak me out a little, I won’t lie. Are they plotting something? Are they secretly training to be emo singers? I have so many questions, and no one to ask who won't look at me like I've grown a third eye.
You know those toothpaste commercials where everyone has dazzling white teeth and perfectly pink gums? Yeah, my reality is a little more… dramatic. My teeth are trying their best, bless their little enamel hearts, but they're competing with this ever-darkening landscape around them. It’s like a tiny, unsettling forest growing on my face. A very, very dark forest.
Sometimes I catch myself staring. It's a bad habit, I know. But I'm trying to figure out the why. Is it genetic? Did I do something wrong? Did I eat something super weird that dyed them permanently? Did I, like, accidentally gargle with dark chocolate fondue? The possibilities are both endless and slightly terrifying.
And the worst part? When I try to talk about it, people either don't see it or they give me that patronizing "Oh, that's probably normal!" kind of smile. Normal? Since when is this level of charcoal on my gum line normal? Are we all just secretly living in a world of black gums and nobody’s telling me? Is this some kind of underground beauty trend I missed?
I’ve even resorted to Googling. Oh, the internet, my trusted confidante and worst enemy. I typed in "black gums" and let me tell you, the results are… varied. Some of it is medical stuff, which is scary. Some of it is just people complaining, which is comforting in a weird, commiserating sort of way. And then there's the stuff that makes you question reality. "Can you get black gums from eating too much licorice?" Uh, possibly? Should I be worried about my questionable midnight snack habits?

There are so many things I worry about in life. Did I pay that bill? Is my cat judging my life choices? Will I ever find socks that match? But now, I have a whole new category of anxiety: the dark hue of my gingiva. It’s like a little black cloud that follows me around, and not in a cool, edgy way.
I’m starting to feel like a character in a weird dental mystery novel. "The Case of the Enigmatic Ebony Gums." Chapter one: The patient presents with teeth that are, frankly, just trying their best, but their gums… oh, their gums are a story unto themselves. A dark, mysterious story.
And it’s not just me being vain, okay? I mean, part of it is definitely that. I want my smile to be, you know, smile-worthy. Not a dental diorama that looks like it’s preparing for a funeral. But also, I’m genuinely concerned. Is this a sign of something more? Is my mouth staging a protest?
I remember when my gums were that lovely, pale pink. They were shy. They were demure. Now? They're bold. They're assertive. They're practically screaming, "Look at me! I'm the most interesting part of your face!" And, frankly, I don't know how to handle that kind of attention.
It’s like I’ve developed a superpower, but it’s not flying or super strength. It’s the power to make my gums look like I've been smoking a pack a day since I was five. Which, for the record, I haven't. My lungs are perfectly clear, thank you very much. My gums, on the other hand, are a different story.

I’ve tried looking at pictures of other people's gums online. It’s a whole rabbit hole. Some people have perfectly pink gums. Then there are those with gum recession, which is a whole other nightmare I'm trying to avoid. And then, scattered amongst the perfection, are the occasional mentions of "hyperpigmentation" and "melanin." Melanin? In my gums? Is that even a thing?
Apparently, yes. It is a thing. Who knew our gums had their own internal tanning bed? And some people just naturally have darker gums. Like, it's just their thing. And I'm over here thinking, "Why couldn't I have gotten that trait?" Instead, I got the trait that makes my mouth look like it's perpetually trying to hide something.
Maybe it’s the way I brush. Am I too aggressive? Am I not aggressive enough? Is there a secret gum-brushing handshake I missed the memo on? I’m picturing tiny gum-brushing gurus out there, shaking their heads at my amateur techniques.
And the comments from others! My best friend, bless her heart, tried to be helpful. "Maybe it's the lighting?" she said, squinting at my mouth. No, honey. It's not the lighting. It's the gums. They've gone full Macbeth in there.
Then there's the whole thing about smoking. I don't smoke. Never have. So it's not that. It's not caffeine, it's not coffee, it's not tea. What is it? Is it the stress? Are my gums so stressed out by my life that they've turned black from sheer anxiety? That's a theory I can get behind.
I’m seriously considering a dentist appointment. Not just for a regular check-up, but for a dedicated "Gums Gone Black" consultation. I'll walk in, point to my mouth, and say, "Doc, what's the deal? Are these the gums of a villain? Am I secretly a comic book character with a dark secret?"
I just want to feel confident when I smile. Is that too much to ask? I want to flash a grin and not have people wonder if I’ve been chewing on charcoal briquettes. I want my gums to be a supporting actor, not the dramatic lead in my smile's production.
It’s funny, isn’t it? We spend so much time worrying about our skin, our hair, our weight. But our gums? They’re kind of the unsung heroes of our faces. And when they decide to go rogue, well, it throws off the whole aesthetic. It’s like a perfectly put-together outfit, but then you notice one sock is bright orange. It just… doesn't quite fit.
So, to all my fellow sufferers of the mysteriously darkened gingiva, I see you. I feel you. We are a silent army, united by our slightly unsettling gum color. Maybe we should start a club. "The Black Gum Brigade." Our motto? "We’re not sad, we're just… pigmented."
In the meantime, I’m going to keep brushing. And flossing. And maybe I’ll try some of that fancy mouthwash that promises to "whiten and brighten." Who knows, maybe it works on gums too. It's worth a shot, right? Anything to bring a little more rosy pink back into my life. Or at least, a less intense shade of black. A subtle black, perhaps. The "I just had a delicious dark chocolate croissant" kind of black. We can only hope.
And if all else fails? I’ll just embrace it. Maybe it's a power move. Maybe it says, "I'm mysterious. I'm edgy. I've seen things." Or maybe it just says, "My gums are black, and I have no earthly idea why." Either way, it’s a conversation starter, that’s for sure. And honestly, sometimes, that’s just what you need. A little bit of mystery, right there in your smile.
